Brief History of Basketball:

For the most part the game is played indoors, however, with some rule changes, the game is as well played out doors.  The outdoors games are usually played in the inner cities and in rural areas.

In 1891 James Naismith, (Canadian -

American clergy, educator and physician),

got the game going.  James was at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School.  His boss ask him to come up with some indoor activity during the winter months that would keep the boys in shape.  Hence forth, a wooden peach basket attached to the wall would serve as the basket and the first ball used was a soccer ball.

In the beginning, the rules came from a bit of football, hockey and soccer.

In World War II service men, during their down time at war played the game in many countries.  Then the popularity grew as

both a men and women’s game.

Credit is also given to the World War II

vets, who came up with the game of ‘wheel chair basketball’.

Depending on the level of play, some games are played on just a half court.
