Brief History Of Softball:

The indoor game was invented by George Hancock in Chicago, 1887.  As men were at a boat club, someone grabbed a boxing glove and threw it to another guy with a broomstick.  Hancock yelled, “Play Ball”.  In 1888, the game

moved outside.

Modifications in Minneapolis were made in 1895 by a fire fighter who wanted to keep his men in shape during the off hours at the fire

house.

The game went though a few name changes, as Kitten League Ball, later changed to Kitten Ball.  This was the name of the 1st fire house team.  Other names for the game were, diamond ball, mush ball, cabbage ball, and finally softball.

In 1895 the first women’s game was played at a Chicago high school.  Spalding boosted the fan base by giving a large ad space in one of their guide books.
