Brief History Of Volleyball:

In February 1895, volleyball would be created by William Morgan, a YMCA Director in Massachusetts.

Four years prior and ten miles down the road, basketball was first played.

The indoor game itself came to be for older men with some athletic skills.  The game at this time was actually called, “Mintonette’.

In 1896, Alfred Holstead noticed how the ball was being vollyed over the net.  This is when the game would be changed to Volly Ball, (as two words).  As time went by, the final name would be ‘Volleyball’, (one word and an e added).

The game soon took hold over the country side.

Some say the  first official ball was designed and made by Spalding in 1896.  Others say it was not until 1900.

More growth to the game took place when the American Forces gave their troops thousands

of volleyballs to give to their allies.

Canada in 1900 was the first to officially adopt the game.  The World’s Championship for

women was in 1952.

Beach Volleyball with rule changes came to be in 1987.  The game was allowed in the summer Olympics in 1996.
